God leads in a New Direction

Pam and I want to share what will be happening in our lives over the next few months. We have accepted an opportunity to work with Global Strategy in Tennessee for 3 years on missionary status and then we will return to the field. We will be helping to identify, process, evaluate, and nurture candidates for overseas missionary service as well as seek to encourage short term service and potential partnerships.

We prayed and struggled to discern the Lord’s will in this matter. We tried to strip away any biases and make sure that we were listening to the Lord only. We love working alongside all of our missionary colleagues. Our boys are doing well along with our families so their well-being did not influence our decision.

The initial call we received over 10 years ago was to serve the Lord overseas and share the Gospel to make His name known and worshipped. We believe this position will encourage and facilitate others to access opportunities for different types of mission service. We love to see unreached peoples receive the Gospel. This role can help candidates prepare themselves and clarify the call on their lives. We desire to see prepared candidates and willing partners serve the Lord in strategic places around the world. This position allows us to be true to the call on our lives and help send laborers into the harvest. The position will be a challenge and we cannot enter it capriciously or without prayer.

We have lived in South Africa for ten years and it is home. Around the middle of August, we will be relocating to Nashville. Until then, we are actively involved in the work and continue to assist in reaching the lost of Africa. Your prayers have been instrumental over the years!!! Although it has been an extremely tough decision and it is with a sense of loss we leave Africa & our current ministry, we are excited to be embarking on this next phase of our journey.

Graduation Time!!

After four years, Drew has graduated from North Carolina State University with a BA in Political Science and a minor in Economics. We praise the Lord for his great accomplishment. Pam and I came back to the USA and along with Matthew were able to witness his graduation at the RBC Center. He is also taking license exams so he can start his new job as a financial consultant with Waddell and Reed. He hopes to start his new job the first of July. Please pray for him to pass his exams and to start his new job well. If you have any need for a hard-working, ambitious, and determined financial planner; do not hesitate to call :-)

Another congratulations, Don’s brother Kenneth also graduated from Richmond Community College with a degree in Electrical/Electronics Technology. Well done gentlemen.

Hope for the Herero

Many of you have been praying alongside of us for the Herero of Namibia from the information contained on the Forgotten Peoples Website and from the prayer cards. They are an unreached and unengaged people group that needs to hear a clear presentation of the Gospel. Praise the Lord that the Petro family has answered the call to go to them and will hopefully arrive before the end of the year. Please pray for them, as well as the church and family that they will leave behind and pray that the Namibian government would grant them access to live in their beautiful country. May the people of Namibia be blessed as the Gospel goes out among them.

Cape Flats Ministry

We are so thankful to work alongside the members of the East Ridge Baptist Church in the Mitchell’s Plain area. We enjoy going out into the new areas beyond the church where there are not any churches and lots of new people who have moved in. It is always a blessing to see people accept the Lord and come to church. It was also encouraging to see a lady that Pam led to the Lord begin coming to church and she brought her mother on Mother’s Day. We have also had some interesting conversations with “cousins” that we have met. We pray that many in this area will come to know the Prince of Peace.

Valentine’s Day 1981 and Beyond...

The two of us first laid eyes upon each other and spoke to each other on February 14, 1981. It is hard to believe that we have known each other 30 years. We praise the Lord for bringing us together and keeping us together. Thanks to all of you for praying for us during our time on the field and we pray for all of you as well.

An Mbalantu Baptism Service in Outapi

We are praising the Lord for five Baptisms in the new church in Northern Namibia. Pastor Aaron Hall pastor of the Red Springs Baptist Church from the Bi-Fork Association was demonstrating how to baptize. These leaders will be prepared to baptize in the future as they lead the new “Jesus is the Way Baptist Church.” Please pray for them as they experience growing pains. Also pray diligently because the enemy is as active as the Spirit just not as strong.

Christmas in Cape Town

All five of us had a wonderful time seeing the sights and attractions of Cape Town. More importantly, we had the opportunity to be together and talk, eat, play games and enjoy each other. We rode the cable car up Table Mountain, played at Dolphin Beach, stood by the shark spotter as she scanned Muizenberg Beach for Great Whites and spent time with the penguins. It was wonderful to view a beautiful portion of God’s creation.

Drew, Matthew and Don’s mom were set to arrive in Cape Town on Sunday 19 December from London through Washington, DC. However, cold temperatures, ice and freezing rain paralyzed Heathrow Airport. The flight from Washington was cancelled so we rebooked them and rerouted them to New York. Every flight before and after was cancelled, but they took the one flight that got them to London. Once they got to London, suddenly their flight to South Africa was cancelled and they were informed that they would arrive in SA on the 26th after Christmas. Even though they were told it was impossible, they got on the only flight (flying standby) that left that night and arrived in Cape Town on Tuesday 21 December. The only way they got to South Africa when they did was the marvelous hand of the Lord. We praise the Lord for his kindness and wonderful care. We also were impressed at how the boys and Don’s mom handled the whole ordeal. God truly is good.

Ten years ago, Pam and I and our boys were called to South Africa. It is because of the Lord’s prompting of your heart to give to the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas offering that we are able to be here. I cannot thank you enough for your sacrifice of giving and your sacrifice of taking the time to pray for us. In God’s eyes and also in our eyes, you are as much a part of the spread of the Gospel here in Southern Africa as we strive to be. We will all rejoice in what God is doing. Many Africans that you will meet in heaven one day will praise the Father for your faithfulness in allowing them to hear the Gospel that saved their soul. I have attached a portion of a document that we forwarded to many of the SBC churches to use as a bulletin insert or flyer. Once again, thank you, thank you, and thank you.

This month has been very busy and it is not over yet. In addition to doing performance evaluations, making budget cut recommendations for 2011 and the many things that Pam and I have been doing, we did manage to squeeze in some fun. We saw the USA defeat South Africa 1-0 in a thrilling soccer game. We also were invited to a murder mystery based in the roaring 1920’s entitled “”Murder at the Juice Joint”. I dressed up at Notorious Nick Nementz, Northside Chicago mob boss, and my fiancée, Molly Moll was by my side. We also attended Sister Georgina Lewis’ 75th birthday party. She is a dear saint and a witnessing Christian who has led many to the Lord. She attends Eastridge Baptist Church in Mitchell’s Plain, where we worship, under the leadership of Pastor Bennie Dryer. In case enquiring minds would like to know: the cigar was never lit, the cigarette holder never had a cigarette & the bottle on the table at the 75th Birthday Party contained 100% bubbly grape juice :-)

Pam and I do wish everyone a blessed Thanksgiving. Eat a little turkey, stuffing and our other favorites with family that we will likewise miss and we will all thank the Lord for what He has done.

New Member of the Family; teeth and all- October 2010

On 14 October we brought a new 10 week old Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy to our home. The Ridgeback is a dog that originated from a mixture and successive breeding of a Khoi-khoi semi-domesticated wild dog used to hunt lions and European breeds. As you may notice in the photos, there is a ridge of hair that is prominent down the back. The rose in the picture was destroyed a few seconds after the photo was taken. Also, she is an accomplished digger and rock, stick and root chewer. Chelsea is a beautiful sweetie, but is also a busy puppy.

New Missionaries- October to December 2010

Pam and I are so thrilled to have two new families to join our TVR (Town, Village and Rural) Teams to spread the Gospel and plant and develop churches. Chuck and Amy Barbour and their three kids (Caleb, Joy and Mark) will be moving to George to work among the Xhosa People. Todd and Deborah Hoskins just arrived in Swaziland for two years to teach and disciple the new and fledgling churches around Manzini and further south. Your faithful giving and powerful prayers are the catalyst that the Lord is using to spread His Kingdom and you have an integral part in that expansion. May the Lord continue to bless you as you serve Him. Thank you so much.

Birds of Kruger- October 2010

I do not want to forget the birds of the air that the Lord has created. The Fish Eagle was sitting on a branch eating a fish. It is awe inspiring to see him swoop down and catch a fish in his talons. The Saddle Billed Stork is very rare and we saw three by the river.

The Crested Barbet came close looking for a handout (he was disappointed) and the Southern Ground Hornbill walked along with a strut.

The Wahlberg Eagle drank water while the Cape Starlings gathered round and the Lilac Purple Breasted Roller paused in the road to have a look. We saw over 4 types of eagles and many other birds as well. We had a wonderful time and hopefully we will not wait 8 more years to go again.

Besides the Big 5, there are many other wonderful animals that God has created. The Honey Badger was going down the road and he turned to bare his teeth and growled. He was impressive and I kept my distance. The Nyala, Giraffe, Kudu, Zebras, Hyena pups and many more were just a demonstration of our creative and miraculous God.

Kruger National Park is a world renowned animal reserve that covers over 22,000 square meters (8,000 square miles). Pam and I took a min-vacation and went there for 2 nights. It was wonderful. We spent one night at the Satara Camp and the next at the Shingwedzi Camp inside the park. We also rented a car in which the air conditioner never worked. The first day the temperature got up to 46 degrees C (115 degrees F) and we were thankful we did not scare the animals awayJ. The next day was overcast and cooler. Pam and I saw 4 of the Big 5 (Elephant, Rhino, Cape Buffalo and Lions) in abundance. The rhino stood by the road so we waited in the heat till he would let us pass. I will not get in a tussle with him. Two lions and 4 lionesses eyed the water hole and we saw the whole scene from a safe distance. The Leopard is an elusive creature and I have only seen two and both were crossing the road. One day I hope to get a proper photo.

Fellowship and Prayer- October 2010

On the first of October, most of the IMB missionaries from the southern part of South Africa met at a bed and breakfast in the farm town of Malmesbury (65Kms or 39 miles north of Cape Town) for an intense time of meetings and prayer. This is the first time many of us have been able to get together in over a year. The Lord blessed us in being able to find an inexpensive place for all of us to meet. We discussed pressing issues, planned and prayed over many items from early in the morning to late in the evening. We also had some of our wonderful support folks to inspire, challenge and assist us in many ways. Thank you so much for your faithfulness in giving so that we can have times to really seek after the Lord and be in tune with His leading.

Air Show over Cape Town- September 2010

Pam, John and Liz Johnston from the Northern Cape and I discovered that there was going to be an Air Show at Ysterplaat Air Force base here in Cape Town. John is former USAF and we looked forward to attending the show. We saw many sights as shown below such as the predator drone used in Iraq and Afghanistan, SA’s Grippen fighter, a mock war with helicopters and SADF (South African Defense Force) soldiers and a US C-130 that dropped American Paratroopers. We also saw 5 vintage C-47 (DC3) aircraft that were used during WWII, and a variety of jets, prop planes and much, much more. I really enjoyed talking to dozens of our Air Force personnel from all across America and please continue to pray for all of our servicemen and women and their safety.

Proper Teas and Evangelistic Train Services-September 2010

Kirby Woods Baptist and Eastridge Baptist in Mitchell’s Plain teamed up to reach out to people in the community. The youth from Eastridge approached us about doing a train service. In other words, we boarded the Metrorail train and rode 45 minutes into the Cape Town city center and then reboarded for the trip back. While on the train, we sang, gave testimonies, handed out tracts, witnessed and preached. The youth and the adults all took part and many people including Muslims heard the Gospel and read the tracts. Two days later, the women on the team and the church ladies held 5 Women’s teas. The Eastridge ladies asked unbelieving neighbors to host a tea in their small homes. The volunteers served tea and biscuits (cookies) and also taught Bible stories and did multiple crafts. The attendance was phenomenal and 135 ladies were ministered to with the Gospel. As you can see, it was standing room only.

Pam and I were overjoyed to have our dear missionary colleague friends from Memphis back to minister alongside us. They faithfully worked with us to plant a church in Barcelona and have now followed us to Cape Town. They are a wonderful blessing. Over 9 days they presented the Gospel to over 1500 people (including a 20 minute Gospel presentation to over 1350 students and staff at a middle school). They taught kids, adults, and anyone who would listen at different locations in Mitchell’s Plain. We also had 4 outdoor soup kitchens in the poor areas where we offered physical food after the spiritual food had been served. The follow up is in progress and pray that even more may come to the Lord.

The Himba and the Holy Fire - August, 2010

Pam and I had a rare opportunity to visit a Himba village. Unlike tourists who come to snap pictures of a people that live off the land and still dress as their ancestors did, we wanted to know the people. We sat down and conversed through our Himba translator and asked many questions. They even asked about our kids. The women cover themselves with red ochre which is a combination of goat or sheep fat mixed with a special red clay. It was fascinating to hear how the people have adapted to the elements and their genius in doing things. For example, our translator showed us the wooden pillow that the men use. A man will lie on his right side with his head on the “pillow” and his wife will sleep on his right arm. At night, the people will sit around the “holy fire” and discuss things and ask the ancestors or their “supreme god” for assistance. Sadly, all of the people are needed for the village to function, even the kids, and very few ever leave or learn a second language. I could envision a missionary sitting around the fire and telling Bible stories. We do not want to change the positive elements or even the dress of their culture, but we just want them to know Jesus and let him transform the crucial elements in order to be faithful to him.

The Peoples of Sun-scorched Southern Namibia - August, 2010

Namibia is a very beautiful country. The southern part borders on or is in the Kalahari Desert. In our research to learn about the peoples and how to reach them, we also learned quite a bit about the country. I remember reading about the settlers along the mighty Omaruru River in the town of the same name. It turns out that on a good year the river will run for only 2-3 days.

We met and talked to many inhabitants of the land such as
the Nama,

the Basters,

the Coloureds and the Damara.

What a joy to talk with many of these people and to especially meet some dear brothers and sisters in the Lord. The Nama are part of the overall Khoi-Khoi peoples and are found mostly in Southern Namibia. The Basters are a combination of the Coloureds originally from South Africa (African mixed with Malay and European White) and the White German and Afrikaans farmers, primarily around Luderitz. The Damara are a Bantu tribe that seemed to have lost most of their cultural identity or at least merged with the Nama. It is a wonderful combination and I pray that all of these peoples come to be our family members in the Lord.

Kruger, our Great Dane: 2000-2010

When we arrived in South Africa in early 2001, less than a week later we adopted a solid black, gangly, Scooby Doo looking puppy that we named Kruger. He has been a member of our family and a devoted pet and watch dog. After a good long life, he contracted bone cancer in his left shoulder that had spread maliciously and we sadly had to put him out of his pain. I praise the Lord for devoted pets that we are able to share our lives with. Every relationship that we have is on loan. If we want to have permanent relationships then they must be through the Lord. Please make sure that your relationship to him is permanent.

A Partnership made in Heaven; Northern Texas and Northern Namibia - July, 2010

As you may know, the Bi-Fork Association of Texas adopted the Mbalantu people. At great expense, people like you have traveled many miles over the past two years to plant a church. The last team in June witnessed to a man who came to the Bible Study named Erastus (Hawaiian shirt). He was trained for 5 months by YWAM and seems to be theologically sound. He was willing to teach the Bible study after the team left and they taught him to use a disciplers’ guide. He has been meeting weekly with an average of 15 people. There are other men in the study including David (in red shirt & hat) who owned a bar and a disco. After accepting the Lord, he does not serve alcohol anymore that I know of, and closed the Club Jet Disco where the Bible study now meets. We went out with the team this time, inviting more to come to the Bible study. The next day, team members as well as some Bible study members went witnessing and helped repaint over the disco sign and ¾ of the inside (it was completely black with a disco ball and mirrors), so that it would not hinder people from coming. They are already asking questions about starting a new church. Praise the Lord for his marvelous works and for the faithfulness of the members of the Bi-Fork Association. Pray also for the members and leaders of the Bible study.

Black Balloons and a Black Tuxedo - July, 2010

As of 23 July 2010, I have officially been living and breathing here on planet earth for 50 years. It seemed to have happened awfully fast. The only one more shocked than I was my dear mother. Oh well, did I celebrate the day with mourning and black balloons? No, instead I donned a black tuxedo and Pam wore a black dress and we went ballroom dancing with each other. However, later on some of our missionary friends with Pam’s planning completely surprised me with a party. Pam, thank you and everyone else for your thoughtfulness. By the way, if you know the Lord as your personal savior, 10,000 years old is not even the beginning. (John 6:51)

Upington; an Oasis in the Kalahari Desert - July, 2010

The town of Upington in the Northern Cape of South Africa is called the Green Kalahari. The Orange River flows through the middle of this dry land and gives life to people, animals and plants. The farmers ship raisins from here to destinations all over the world because of the size and sweetness of these raisins. In fact, the longest runway in the southern hemisphere is here due to the shipping of the raisins and it also serves as an alternate landing spot for the space shuttle. The Johnstons live and work in this area and proclaim the Gospel among many people. They work with new churches, assist other churches and have Bible studies in French, Swahili, and Afrikaans for people from all over Africa. Pam and I enjoyed working alongside them and seeing the work that the Lord is doing. Please pray for them as they spread the Word in a dry and thirsty land.

Let the Children Come - June, 2010

We spent two weeks with the Cape Town Team reaching out to students in three schools (grades 6 through 9) in poor townships in the Xhosa areas. The first week we worked alongside the Cape Town Baptist Seminary students and the second week with the Forest Hills Baptist Church from Raleigh. What a privilege and an honor to minister together in Jesus’ name. According to our records, 587 children came to the schools to attend the holiday Bible club (VBS) and to hear a clear presentation of the Gospel. The amazing thing was that the schools were actually closed due to the world cup. One mother came by to see what was going on because her son who does not like school was up early Saturday morning and off to school. Another mother talked about the immediate and welcome change in her teen daughter’s actions such that both of them are going to church. I praise the Lord for the 287 kids who accepted the Lord and pray that their lives and witness will save countless others. Follow-up work has begun in the schools and Bible studies have started there as well.

Uruguay and France Battle it out on Opening Day - June, 2010

We continued our stroll along the fan walk on our way to see Uruguay and France battle it out on the field. We cheered, Pam and Matthew blew their vuvuzelas, and I enjoyed my bright blue earplugs. The vuvuzelas are not bad inside the stadium, but I was not taking any chances. We had a wonderful time. On the train ride home, some fans had enjoyed themselves too much, but it was an exciting day. Speaking of exciting, we were heavily involved with ministry opportunities because of all the heightened interest, the excitement and openness, and the chance to interact with visitors from places that do not have open access to the Gospel. I am thankful that many who live here and even those who left SA took Jesus along with them in their own heart.

Soccer World Cup 2010; It’s Time for Africa - June, 2010

The big news here in South Africa for June/July (and the rest of the football loving world) was the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The country was primed and ready to host the world. Even the three of us got in the middle of the happenings. Our day started with a ride on the Metrorail train and then a stroll along the fan walk with tens of thousands of others towards the new stadium.

We stopped along the way to eat lunch and watched the SA versus Mexico game on television, but this was only the beginning.

Rugby en ‘n Lekker Braai - May, 2010

One of our favorite sports here in South Africa is rugby. Pam and I enjoy watching it and the boys enjoyed playing it. While Matthew was here, we were blessed to see the Stormers play the Blue Bulls in Cape Town for the Super 14 Semi-final game and also to see the South African Springboks beat the “chickens” from France. Naturally, a “lekker braai” (a tasty barbeque) with chicken sosaties, boerewors (beef sausage), and braai bread is a wonderful event in itself. Matthew is our cook and although he prefers cooking over wood logs that burn down to wood chips; he reluctantly agreed to use my charcoal and fire-starters. It was baie lekker (very good).

Climbing up the Lion’s Head - May, 2010

One beautiful winter’s morning, all three of us climbed up to the top of Lion’s Head. It rises 669 meters (2,195 feet) above sea level. It was a long climb, but the views were stunning.

Part of the climb had chains where you hold onto so you do not fall off the side of the mountain and some areas were so vertical that ladders were put in place to scale the sheer cliffs.

It was fun and exciting and a wonderful part of God’s magnificent creation.

Matthew sails over the Ocean to Cape Town - May, 2010

In May, Matthew came back to South Africa for a month long visit. He arrived the day after his 20th birthday and found two thrilled parents and a cake. It is hard to believe that our youngest is 20. He reacquainted himself quickly with his favorite South African foods, seafood, sodas, juices, sauces, sights and sounds. We visited many places in Cape Town like Boulders, where African Penguins nest and play, Simonstown, the fishing areas around Hout Bay, and of course the top of Table Mountain. We even let him fly to Port Elizabeth to see some of his old friends like the two shown below. We had a wonderful time and it ended too soon. Please remember Drew who was working a job and an internship in North Carolina and was not able to join us. Pray that we will all be together in December.

Love those Meetings!! - April/May 2010

When I worked as an engineer and Pam as a pharmacist, we had our share of meetings. I know many of you cringe as well at the thought of a week-long meeting. Many of them were boring, full of “stuff” that did not apply to me personally and I get tired of sitting that long. However, we were at a Cluster Leadership Meeting with the leader of our cluster and four other folks where we discussed many things related to spreading the Gospel in Southern Africa. Many souls were at stake and the meeting was not boring but challenging. The following week, I met with ten or so people who are seeing the Lord move in miraculous ways in their ministry and we discussed “best practices” and held each other accountable to examine what we are doing in order to see better results. May the Lord send his Spirit to convict the souls of people that desperately need him and to enlighten us as we serve him. We also have a new name and logo for our cluster to better define our overall ministry area.

KwaZulu-Natal; Warm Spot of South Africa - April, 2010

The areas in and around Durban are situated on the eastern coast of South Africa along the Indian Ocean. It is a tropical climate where the air and the water are warm and comfortable even in winter. It is a beautiful place with banana plantations, sugar cane fields and monkeys playing in the trees. It is also home to the greatest number of Indians that live outside of India itself along with many other peoples and religions. We visited three families that work in the greater Durban area and saw first-hand the wonderful ministries that they are involved in for the Lord. Please pray for the Yngsdals, Taylors and Flippos as they impact KwaZuluNatal with the Gospel.

What’s up with the Bunny?

Today, I dashed into a mall here in South Africa to pay the phone bill and some other bills at the bank. In the middle of the mall was a large enclosed display area about 30 feet (9.1 meters) by 30 feet square. The big letters in Afrikaans read, “Paasfees.” In English that is translated as Easter. The interesting thing is that this mall with this display where we frequent is always full of Muslim shoppers. They were as excited about the chocolate eggs, chocolate bunnies, marshmallow eggs, and hot cross buns as I am.

However, I am much more excited and joyful about the true meaning of Easter than a bunch of chocolate. If you know me, you know I love my chocolate. However, my joy in no way compares to the joy I have for the one who died for my sins and was raised from the dead on the third day so that I can have eternal life. What gets you excited at Easter? How many of you are faithfully watching basketball these days? Who is going to win it all in March Madness!
You may long to be one of those players or even wish to be the coach. But how important are the fans? There can only be so many players on the court. A team can only afford to have so many on the sidelines, ready to go in. But they always make room for a fan whether in the stands, on TV or streaming the game online.
In the world of missions, we may long to be one of those individuals living out in the village, sharing oral Bible stories or living in the huge metropolitan center, coordinating the work of multiple house groups. Perhaps we wish to be a trainer. But how important are the intercessors back home?
I’ve seen those teams who are all pumped up because their fans are cheering them on . . . and I’ve seen those teams playing with no one in the stands. A team should fight to win whether the fans come or not . . . but it is easier with a crowd cheering you on.
You, and God’s great cloud of witnesses, are part of the crowd cheering the missionaries on when you pray for the salvation of every tribe and tongue and nation. When you ask God to call out laborers to the harvest, you can celebrate His work as new missionaries are appointed. When you pray for a witch doctor or imam to be released from his false belief system then he becomes a Christian leader in the community, you should rejoice that God has called you too. He has called you to intercede, and He is answering prayer.
Give thanks today for the privilege of being a cheerleader for God!

Shatter the Silence

As many of you may have known, we used to be part of the Central, Eastern and Southern Africa Region. Under the new reorganization, we now belong to the Sub-Saharan Africa Global Affinity Group. The Strategy Leader for this vast region is Tim Cearley. His job is so demanding that he needed a good administrative assistant to help him with many multiple tasks. Shortly after the start of the month, Pam became his administrative assistant. This is a demanding job and Pam is doing great. Please pray for her as she seeks to help out in such a way as to free up Tim to lead this cluster. Pray that our strategy leader and others under him can follow the will of the Lord so that the silence and gloom of sin over Africa can be shattered by the life-giving Gospel and the joy that it gives.

We Saw the Queen

I have heard people call Cape Town the “New York” of the continent of Africa. It certainly is a big, diverse place. We are gradually learning our way around, as time allows, in getting from point A to point B. We visited a South African style Mexican restaurant when we were in the downtown City Bowl area and looked around where Andrew Murray, the famous Scottish preacher, first preached in the early days of the Cape Settlement.

Upon leaving, we spied a queen. The Queen Mary 2, QM2, was docked at the harbor and she is quite a beautiful lady. However, our desire is for everyone in this city to know Jesus who is the true king and is awesome and stands above all in his majesty to the glory of God the Father.

A Very Colorful Band

We consider it a joy to be able to share the Gospel primarily with the people group known as the Coloureds. We also have some dear Coloured friends that work alongside us. They are a people group of mixed origin with a strong sense of identity and separateness from both black Africans and white Africans. They usually speak either Afrikaans or English (and many times both) rather than a traditional ‘African’ language. Their rich heritage in the Cape includes their Minstrel Parade and music festivals held in January. The colorful costumes and choreographed street dancing is energetic and fun. The music is known as goema which is jazz-like in form with a tinny timbre. In February, we saw a group practicing and earning a little extra income from tourists on the side. Please pray for us as we follow the Lord in discovering where we can best share the Gospel in the midst of the 4 million plus people in Cape Town.

Unloaded, Unpacked, Plugged in and Ready to Roll

We have been in Cape Town for one month now. Everything was unloaded and only 1 serving plate, 1 glass, and one vegetable bowl was broken and part of our TV entertainment center was damaged along with some scratches. By the grace of God, all of the boxes are unpacked and the contents stored away. The office supplies are stored, inventoried, and we have shipped some supplies out to other missionaries. The garage is organized and everything in its place. We are now hooked up with phone and internet and the work is in full swing.

Although we miss our friends in PE, we and the dogs are settling in nicely. We have been to the beach once as you see in the picture for a total of 5 minutes or less and the water we have not touched. The view from our house of Table Mountain is breathtaking and is such a beautiful part of God’s creation. However, most of our views will be in the office (staring at the garage) working to serve the missionaries we are in charge of and asking the Lord to show us how he wants the unengaged people groups of our area to be reached. We will also spend a lot of time in the townships spreading the Gospel. We did not leave our family, children and friends for the view. We came here to help reach the lost. Please pray for us to reach the lost!!

Another Good Bye and Farewell!! February 2010

One of the facts of life in being a missionary is always saying "good bye" and "farewell." We say these words to friends, family, our own children, and even to places all the time. We refer to ourselves as global nomads. The boys’ university friends wonder why their room looks like their home. That’s because it is. On 8 February, we along with our two dogs left Port Elizabeth (the boys consider PE home) and began our journey to Cape Town. We said goodbye to many friends and churches and sadly were not able to speak to everyone as we had hoped.

The 480 mile journey was about 35 miles in progress when our red car starting overheating badly. After stopping to let it cool and later running the heat in the middle of summer which did not help, I prayed that car could go two more miles to Jeffery’s Bay. God provided a mechanic who just happened to stop at the gas station and his quick fix allowed me to drive into the town to a man who just happens to own a 1994 Mazda like we have. Also, the only rental car place that should have closed 20 minutes before we arrived just happened to still be open. God provided for us and the dogs and after spending the night with the Holders in George, we began again. We are thankful that the blocked up radiator did not occur in the middle of nowhere, at night, with two huge dogs. We thank the Lord for his goodness and care.

GREAT Expectations February 2010

In early February, Pam and I got to visit some dear friends in George, South Africa. Jeff and Lynne Holder stayed at our house in Port Elizabeth to take Afrikaans language training while we were in the States. They are now in George and they comprise the Garden Route Evangelism Area Team or GREAT. They immediately won the hearts and respect of the pastors and church members and have made many contacts and friendships. They actually have succeeded in bringing the pastors together regularly to pray and cast a vision to reach this growing area for the Lord. They are also mentoring a young church planter named Heinrich to expand his vision and his effectiveness. We were able to attend the vision and strategy meeting at their house which is nestled at the foot of the George Peak that we climbed in early 2009 (see earlier post). Please pray for Jeff and Lynne as we have GREAT expectations of what the Lord will do as his people pray and work together in Christian love.

Drew and Matthew have left the sunny shores of South Africa to attend university in the United States. They left a large chunk of their hearts here and carried a worldview back to America based upon their experiences in SA. However, will there be a permanent record of the time they spent here? I feel that there will be a written record of their presence for generations to come. At Grey High School, there are presently 153 wooden or bronze plaques that record the top leaders in every school year dating back to the school’s founding in 1856. Drew is on the 2006 plaque as a prefect. Matthew is on the 2007 plaque for academic honors and on the 2008 plaque for academic honors and prefect. Drew is also on the Aston Manor Primary School plaque for swimming honors in 2001. We praise the Lord for the blessings He has bestowed on our children; to Him alone be the glory. Please pray for Drew and Matthew.

The Finish Line is Just Ahead! January, 2010

We spent the last few days of January with Bobby and Jo Carol Elliott and their African Grey bird Pongo in Nelspruit. We had a wonderful time as we visited these great folks. They have been so faithful and productive in serving the Lord here in Southern Africa. They will retire in about 1 ½ years and their children and grandchildren will be so happy to see them. We know from personal experience how hard it is to leave kids in the States, but I hear that grandkids are even tougher. I praise the Lord for their sacrifice. We visited the township areas where they lead Bible studies, train pastors and leaders to be solid in the faith and where Jo Carol leads a group of 25+ teens every Friday night and teaches them the Gospel and True Love Waits. This small city is gearing up to host some matches for the soccer world cup in just over 90 days. They have a long way to go. Please pray for the Elliotts to continue to finish well as the finish line is just around the bend. They will be missed.

Stunning Swaziland January 2010

In late January, Pam and I went to Swaziland to visit the Allen family in Mbabane and the Myers family in Tshaneni. These are two great families that God is using mightily to serve in the tiny kingdom of Swaziland. The country is beautiful and we came in one of the wettest summers in recent history. Many churches have been started here in the last couple of years and the Lord is really blessing the work. It appears that the road belongs to the cows, but the red clay determines who travels on it. Some of the churches are not accessible when it rains and we had to turn back one day.

Lacie and Nathan Allen are terrific kids. Please pray for Lacie as she has had some hearing issues. While visiting the Myers, we stayed at a place that has a few wild animals floating around. Pam was petting this little zebra that got shunned by his herd so he took up residence at the guest house office. He walks in the lobby and makes himself at home. He is a sweet fellow, but I would not stand behind him. A cow taught me years ago not to do that. Please pray for the Allens and Myers.

Thriving in Rural Africa January 2010

In mid-January, Pam and I had the pleasure to visit with Bob and Susan Morris and their son Robert in Grahamstown. This town is about 80 miles north of Port Elizabeth in the Frontier Country of South Africa. This area is where the 1820 English settlers clashed with the Xhosa over land and cattle. Bob and Susan now work in this area to offer the gift of eternal life to the once embattled Xhosa people. They work in a township in Grahamstown and other rural villages and farms in the area. They assist in an ostrich raising project to couple job creation along with proclaiming the Gospel. Pray for that project as it is experiencing hard times due to the economy. They teach far-flung Bible studies and help to plant new churches among a poor segment of the population. The people are very inventive as you will notice how they repaired their once tile floor with cow-dung. It dries very well and if you chip it, just moisten it and repair it. Bob Morris is standing with a little friend that we met. Please pray for Bob and Susan and their three kids (two of which are in university in America).

Deadly Poisons; Spitting Cobras and AIDS January 2010

Pam and I traveled to Queenstown to visit and minister alongside Tom and Pat Smith. They do evangelism, lead Bible studies, show the Jesus Film and encourage and assist local pastors and leaders. The dead 6 foot plus snake that you see hanging over the fence is a spitting Cobra. It can fire an accurate shot of venom straight into your eyes from 15 feet away. Tom and a local farm hand killed him in the back yard. Another poison that is really taking its toll is AIDS. Nandipag is the bright-eyed 21 year old girl in the red sweater. This former university student had some sores on the back of her leg that would not heal. She was tested and found to be HIV positive. Because of this poison, she will not be here in a few years. We delivered a BGR (Baptist Global Relief) bucket provided by Southern Baptists to give her medical supplies to help her and her family. You can also help provide these as well. We took the opportunity to share the Gospel with her and the family. Please pray for Tom and Pat and their ministry in Queenstown.

East London by the Bay January, 2010

Shortly after our return to South Africa, we joyfully visited and reconnected with some of our colleagues and had an opportunity to see first-hand how the work is going. Our first trip was to the old Ciskei Region which encompasses East London and Queenstown. In East London we visited with Deb Russell and Roxie Shore (Melodie Conner was out-of-country). Roxie and Melodie work with university students and Xhosa youth in the townships. Deb works with Xhosa Youth and adults and also with those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction. She is using the methodology and some materials from Reformers Unanimous. Drugs and alcohol also play a significant role in propagating AIDS. Here is a picture of Roxie and Deb with her young friend “Wabi.” Please pray for them and their ministries.

Pam and I joyfully reported to many of you about the new Barcelona Church in the area where Pam, Betty, and I first started working. We were joined by other nationals and missionaries that God used to propel the work onward. Sunday morning, 3 January 2010, we worshipped with the church. Many were missing due to the holiday time, but we praised the Lord (in Afrikaans) through singing, testimonies, reading the Bible, and then through the sermon.

Stuart Mortimer, a layman from West End Baptist, has left his church to minister to this body of believers and his wife Karin will start a Sunday school in the coming weeks. Please be in prayer for them, and the church and also that they will find a place to worship closer to the area where the people live.

Hello South Africa; we’re back!!

After saying good-bye and giving ten more final hugs to Drew, Matthew, Don’s mom, Danny, Tricia, Hannah and Hailey, we were on our way. Thirty-seven hours later, from the time we arrived at the Raleigh-Durham airport, we went to where we would spend the night. The next day we flew to Port Elizabeth at 39,000 feet and saw the African moon that usually shines both day and night. Thanks so much for your prayers and giving that has made this mission outreach a reality through the power of the Spirit.

A lot is happening with the arrival of 2010. President Jacob Zuma married his 5th wife (currently married to three, one he divorced, one committed suicide, and he has already proposed to the next one). He may desire to have riches and as many wives as Solomon, but I pray that he will come to know the Lord as Solomon did later on in his life. The talk on everyone’s lips is the 2010 Soccer World Cup in June and July. Please pray as so many people prepare to share the Gospel as the world comes to SA.

Welcome Baby Kaylynne Chandler! December, 2009

On 21 December 2009, Pam and I became a great aunt and a great uncle. Kelly, my Brother Kenneth’s oldest daughter, had a baby girl. We praise the Lord for this new arrival to our family and pray for the days ahead for Adam and Kelly. Wow, Kaylynne certainly is beautiful!

Family Christmas time in Carolina December, 2009

There are very few occasions more joyous than spending Christmas together with family. On 19 December, Pam hosted the Gilbert side of her family to an annual Christmas feast. The ladies brought wonderful food and desserts and Pam cooked a 19lb (8.6kg) turkey and a ham that was delicious. Heartbreakingly part of the family was snowed in towards the Winston Salem/Wilkesboro area and were not able to attend. We missed them very much. We did rejoice over the ones that were able to come. We did get 2 hours of snow flurries in Cary. It created great excitement for all of us!

On Christmas Eve, we ate and visited with my mom and all of the Lynch family in Rockingham. We had great food and a wonderful time together. I even had Christmas Goose like in Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” for the first time. That was nice. All of these memories will stay in my heart for a long time.

The hardest part of being a missionary is missing family. However, at God’s request, we are missing most of these times and going to another place to share the Gospel. He has told us of a greater celebration in the future; one in which dear, saved, and long gone family members will attend and also those who have been added to the family of God overseas. One day there will be no more good-byes for those that know the Lord as their Savior.

Hurricanes and Christmas Parades December, 2009

In South Africa, field hockey is a popular sport and enjoyable to watch. It is also played in the U.S to a lesser degree. However, ice hockey (which resembles field hockey on ice has pads, helmets, and lots of bruising and vicious, bone jarring hits and slamming of bodies into the wall) is played on the professional level. We got to see the Carolina Hurricanes take on the NY Rangers. It was exciting!

Pam and I also got to watch the Cary Christmas Parade in the bitter cold. We saw the floats, the marching bands, the dancers and the performers along with Father Christmas (Santa Claus). We even got to see “Elvis” sing and greet the Chick-Fil-A cow. (We love Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwiches).

Pam and I had a wonderful December as we had the chance to share what God is doing in Southern Africa. We spoke to the brothers and sisters at First Baptist Church Cary, Forest Hills and Ephesus Baptist in Raleigh, Fellowship Baptist in Moyock, and Liberty Baptist in Thomasville. I am so encouraged at how these churches and others are being used by the Lord to bring the Gospel to the whole world. Thanks to all of you for your giving and praying. I have included some pictures from the outer bank of North Carolina. It is a wilder place than I had imagined. We also got to spend some time with Ron and Gail Davis who served in many places in Africa before returning to the States. We enjoyed visiting with them and Pastor David from Liberty Baptist.

A House Divided; Clash of the Titans November, 2009

All four of us have been able to watch American football and even attend quite a few games. However, since Don graduated from NCSU and Pam from UNC-Chapel Hill and Drew attends NCSU and Matthew attends UNC, the ultimate family clash was looming on the Horizon. UNC was nationally ranked and favored, but long-standing rivalries make for anybody’s game. In the photos, UNC is kicking a successful field-goal and NCSU is running for a good gain. After a long fought battle NCSU emerged with a one point win. We went to the game together and returned together knowing that bragging rights last until next year. The struggle continues.

Barcelona Church; a New Beginning

If you have looked at some of our previous blog postings, you have seen that Barcelona Township has been an important part of our work as well as on our hearts. Pam and I started in Barcelona and Betty Goeda also came along with us. Through door to door witnessing, Bible studies, help from other missionaries and nationals, and volunteers such as the folks from Kirby Woods Baptist, we have been ministering in this area. When we return to SA, we will be moving from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town and we have been praying about how the work in Barcelona would continue. Praise the Lord because Pastor Jonathan Gallant and the West End Baptist church have come alongside these new believers and this month the Barcelona Baptist Church had their first church service inside a garage. A couple of weeks later a baptismal service was held; ten youth, a mother of two and Sarah, an 82 year old grandmother (in red dress above), were baptized. Sarah’s son also made a profession of faith. It is because of your praying and your support of the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas offering that the Lord used this to grow his kingdom. It takes the whole church to reach the whole world. Thank you so much for doing your part.

More Conventions and Mission Conferences; We Love it!!

Really, we do. It has been a great joy to meet so many brothers and sisters who have a passion for the Lord and the lost. Pam and I and a South Asian colleague were the IMB representatives at the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia State Convention. It was wonderful to see the church planting that they are involved with in VA, North America and the world. We met many great folks. Norfolk has the "Hot Sign" as well.

We then traveled to Denver Baptist Church in Denver, NC for their 4th annual Missions Conference. We had the pleasure of staying with Bill and Carolyn Ratcliff and they frequently travel and minister in South Africa and Mozambique. The staff and the whole church were a joy to be around. Hickory also has my favorite bookstore and doughnut place beside each other. We fed our souls and our body. We love to tell about the things that the Lord is doing in SA. You are a big part of that as well, but He alone deserves the glory.

A Beautiful Fall Day in North Carolina!

We have not seen a Fall Season in North Carolina in over nine years. The evening air is cool and the leaves from the trees fall to the ground like the first good snow of the year. Falling leaves may be your pain, but we watch in child-like wonder. God is such an artist. On 31 October, Reformation Day, we got to watch the Cary Band Day Parade. I have not seen a parade like this in a long time. We enjoyed the floats, the bands, fire trucks and much, much more. Pam also carved a small pumpkin to greet any kids that may come to the door for goodies. That night, under the bright Carolina moon, we saw several high school marching bands compete in the Cary Band Day. Still the beauty and wonder of even this day will not compare with the beauty of that day when we will see the Lord. Tell someone about the Lord so that they may get to enjoy it as well.

We had the joy, the honor and the privilege to share with God’s people about the work that is going on in our part of Southern Africa. Your prayers and giving are making a huge impact on the world. We tell the stories of changed lives due to the power of the Gospel and also what it is like to live, eat, and engage the many cultures in normal every-day life. We shared with the saints at Ca-Vel Baptist in Roxboro, and in Johnston County with St. Mary’s Grove and Pisgah Baptist. We also had a wonderful time with the WMUs of The First Baptist Church of Cary and Forest Hills Baptist. Your questions and encouragement and your desire to know what is going on is so heart-warming. It is good to see God’s people still focusing on the millions that have never heard. May God continue to bless you as you diligently serve him.

It has been 10 long years, but the wait for the NC State Fair was definitely worth it! We visited the fair on a couple of occasions with Don’s mother, brother (Danny), Tricia (his wife), Hannah & Hailey (our nieces). Another time, we went with Drew & Matthew.

We saw cows, horses, pigs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, and geese! We saw all kinds of exhibits from the largest pumpkin (376lb or 171kg) to award-winning cakes & fudge. We also ate lots of delicious foods that you can only have at the fair, including frozen chocolate covered & nut bananas, deep-fried moon pies, corn dogs, funnel cakes, hush puppies, roasted corn, blooming onions, and lots more… Yes, we were suffering when we departed. The boys rode lots of exciting and breath-taking rides! We decided that the fair was designed to give a heart attack, either through the food or the rides! Yes, the theme of the NC State Fair this year was very appropriate, we had “a whole lotta happy!”

We had a wonderful opportunity to speak to the WMU ladies at Cooper’s Gap Baptist Church in Mill Spring, NC and share what their prayers are accomplishing through the Lord in South Africa. The Harvest Festival Dinner and fellowship were a blessing to us. Also, they are only a few minutes away from Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. We also visited the 225 room Biltmore House in Asheville.
The drive through the mountains of NC and East TN was spectacular.

We then attended the West Africa Base Camp training in Murfreesboro, TN. This training will help us to be more effective with partners like the Bi-Fork Association and any of you who might want to adopt a people group in the future! (hint, hint :-)

Love That ACC Football!

One thing that we miss in South Africa is American Football. In SA, they call it Gridiron since football is what they call soccer. They find it hard to understand Gridiron with all of the stopping and starting. The concept of the huddle is definitely a seemingly unsolvable mystery.

We were thankful to see NCSU vs. Duke and later on UNC vs. Florida State. Neither game turned out the way we hoped, but the sights, sounds, atmosphere, passion and pride was great to observe and feel.

Don’t Mess with Texas!!

In early October, we flew into Dallas for a short trip to the Lone Star State. Saturday night, we accompanied Donna Kirtz, Pam’s sister, to her church service and then drove to Vernon, Texas up toward the Oklahoma Border. We had a wonderful stay with Derrell and Janna Monday. He is the DOM (Director of Missions) for the Bi-Fork Association that has adopted the Mbalantu People of Namibia. Don spoke Sunday Morning at the First Baptist Church in Seymour and we both spoke at the Red Fork Associational meeting on Sunday night where we thanked them for their sacrifice and service among this unreached people group. Many of the ladies made dolls & outfits (with matching blankets) with their name & picture, while the gentlemen donated soccer balls. These will be given to the Mbalantu kids in Namibia, while the people in the pictures have promised to pray for the specific children. They are doing an awesome work!!

We also spent a couple of days with Donna and John Kirtz and many times laughed till we cried. We had a fantastic time with them and sadly it ended much too soon. May the Lord bless both of them!

Well, well. Yes, it is football time in America. A time we haven't been able to enjoy for many years. However, this weekend was family weekend at NCSU and we were able to spend time with Drew and his friends. Drew was able to get tickets for us to the NCSU vs. Pitt game. So, after enjoying some really great food (of course, BBQ) at the tailgate, we headed for the game. Even though there was a light mist most of the game, we stayed and cheered until the last minute. Who could have left, it wasn't decided until the last 30 seconds. But the Wolfpack pulled it out and beat Pitt 38 to 31. It was great and our voices will come back soon! (We eagerly look forward to our next football game, NCSU vs. Duke, then its UNC vs. Florida St.) But then, the grandaddy of them all, November 28, UNC vs NCSU!

Colonial Heights Baptist Church GIC- September, 2009

One week later, we were privileged to take part in the 1st GIC (Global Impact Conference) at Colonial Heights Baptist Church in Virginia. We shared with the Sonrisers Class and the Journey in Faith Class about what the Lord is doing in Southern Africa. It was wonderful to be in their homes as well as their classes and share with them. They are all very loving and generous. We were hosted by George and Beverly Stephens in their home. We kept them up way too late each evening but really enjoyed our time with them.

We were able to tour Historic Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg and the Blandford Church. Again, as is becoming quite noticeable, we ate way too much delicious food! We were also thrilled to hear of their outreach to Colonial Heights, Petersburg and the surrounding areas. We pray that the Lord continues to bless this church!

First Baptist North Spartanburg GIC- September, 2009

We had a wonderful opportunity to take part in the 13th annual GIC (Global Impact Conference) at First North Church. We were able to share what God is doing in Southern Africa and also met many wonderful folk! We stayed with Pam Benedict and Melanie Watt. They and the Barnabas Bible Fellowship Class were wonderful and generous and we were so encouraged to see the difference they are making in Spartanburg. While in Spartanburg, we had a wonderful time hiking and enjoyed visiting the Hope Remains ranch (ministry for troubled youth). We ate way too much and laughed more than you can imagine! May the Lord continue to bless and prosper them.

Homecoming Times!- August, 2009

We are sure that many of you debate from year to year whether to go to homecomings and reunions since they happen every year. However, if you haven't had one in 9 or 10 years, it is a wonderful and exciting event. We were privileged to go to CaVel Baptist Church's 75th Homecoming! You probably remember this is where Don served as Associate Pastor of music and worked with the youth and where he was ordained.

We also thoroughly enjoyed the Cameronian Presbyterian Church's Homecoming, where Don grew up. He was also honored to be asked to bring the morning message. We finished up the month at the Gilbert Family Reunion in Kinston. (see photos) It was wonderful to see everyone and catch up on old and new news!

Needless to say, this was a month of good food!

Holiday in Charleston!- July, 2009

For the first time in a long while, the four of us went on a vacation! Only Drew had ever been to Charleston, but all of us fell in love with it's old Southern charm and beauty. We visited Fort Sumter, Patriot's Point and Folley's Beach. We also got to see the USA Eagles rugby team defeat Canada! All of us enjoyed dining at Bubba Gump's Shrimp Co. and Sticky Fingers. We even visited the Moon Pie General Store!

Reorganized and ready to roll!- July, 2009

As many of you know, the IMB underwent a reorganization to sharpen the focus on unreached peoples everywhere. Although some of the reorganization focused on cost savings, the goal was to effectively use the resources that God has given through the local Baptist churches to finish The Task! Under the new changes, Don will be in charge of strategy for all of the Town, Village and Rural teams in South Africa, Namibia and Swaziland. This is huge and challenging area. Pam is also the prayer advocate for this vast area. Please pray for us to follow the Lord's leading in enabling others and ourselves to reach the lost. When we return to South Africa, we will be moving to Cape Town. Pray that the Lord will give us the right ministry area to evangelize and disciple.

The team from Kirbywood Baptist Church has visited South Africa multiple times. We wanted to visit them! We had a wonderful time reconnecting with these wonderful folks on their home turf. We enjoyed times of fellowship, food and worship at their church; plus we got the grand tour of the city. We ate with the team at Rendezvous BBQ just off of Beale Street after watching the world famous ducks at the Peabody Hotel.

We visited Graceland (a first for both of us), the Civil Rights Museum (where Dr. King was assasinated) and Sun Recording Studio (where Elvis, Johnny Cash and others recorded and still record). We also had an opportunity to thank the church and the team for their wonderful support of missions around the world.

On 7 May, we arrived in North Carolina for our Stateside Assignment. It has been so nice to see family and friends and to make new friends. First Baptist Church of Cary has graciously allowed us to live in their mission house. We have enjoyed the church, the Sunday School and Don has even been able to sing in the choir (every once in a while). Elephants and Mountains???? - April, 2009

Although we live in South Africa, we rarely get to do many things due to time and money. However, since Matthew would be leaving South Africa soon, we decided to do some exploring and be adventurous. We visited the Knysna Elephant Park where we were able to ride, pet and feed the elephants! They are awesome.

We also climbed the George Peak, elevation approximately 4500 feet above the starting point. It was a grueling climb and return, taking over 12 hours and a distance of 17kms (or over 10 miles). It has only taken 6 months for Pam's big toenails (which came off during the trip back down the mountain) to grow back! :-)

Kirbywood Volunteer Team spreads the Good News- March, 2009

Our dear friends from Kirbywood Baptist Church returned to share the Gospel with children, youth, women and adults. Yes, they were as busy as it sounds! They came as ambassadors and represented the King and His message. They led many children and adults in Vacation Bible School and worked in conjunction with a feeding project in Barcelona township. They also had time with the women in the township, teaching them first aid, cooking, planting vegetables and sowing the Word. The kids at the children's home remembered the team from last year and excitedly welcomed them back. These kids are often neglected, but the team ministered to them in songs and crafts, while sharing God's love through His word. Because of this team's ministry and the township, Pam and Matthew were able to share God's plan of salvation with the local tavern owner who accepted the Lord as His Savior. Please pray for him, as he has many hard choices to make to be true to his new faith in Jesus.

Namibia Trip - A visit with the Mbalantu!

In February, we (Don and Pam) joined a group from Texas on a trip to Namibia. The churches from the Bi-Fork Association in Texas have adopted the Mbalantu people group in Namibia. They have committed to send at least four volunteer groups each year to the heart of the Mbalantu people in Ovamboland in northern Namibia. We praise the Lord for their commitment to His calling! In preparation for their upcoming trips, we traveled with them to this area. What a blessing! We met so many people, learned so much about their lives, prayed and brainstormed about how to share the Gospel message with them. We even learned some phrases in Oshikwanyama and Oshimbalantu. December came and went faster than we wanted! Drew came and was gone much too quickly. In the two short weeks that he was home, we had a team Christmas party, ate lots of food, had fun playing games, played football in the back yard and had some great fun at the beach!

It is always a sad time at the airport when we say, “Goodbye.” But, the good news is that we will see him again in May!

After Drew left, we departed for a meeting in Johannesburg. After our meeting, we visited a theme park called Gold Reef City. Some people have asked how we handle the stress of missionary work and issues such as crime; well here is a good look….

Well, Don and I officially have no more “school” children. Our boys are all grown up! Matthew officially matriced from school in October, and finished his matric exams in November. We are very proud of him.

At his valedictory service, he was awarded the “Leon Schauder Memorial Prize.” This is quite a prestigious award given for “character, scholastic ability, tolerance, leadership of a non-aggressive type – a boy likely to serve the community without thought of personal gain.”

Drew is almost “21!” He is halfway through his sophomore year at North Carolina State University and continues to make us proud. He will be arriving for Christmas on Tuesday after 3 days of travel. He will be tired and we will be worried until he lands, so please pray for his safe and uneventful flights! Then, only 2 short weeks later, he will be returning. Please, pray for those trips also.

The question that you may be asking is “What about Matthew?” Matthew has applied to several universities, has been accepted to one and is awaiting responses from the others. Pray with us as he chooses the university he will attend. Pray that the Lord will guide him in making this very important decision. We will keep you updated on this.

The three of us will be returning to the States in May of 2009. Don and I will remain until the end of December before returning. Please be in prayer for us, as we face this huge change. Not only is it an “empty nest,” but it’s an empty nest on the other side of the world!

A Refreshing Time!

Recently, we were fortunate to lead and participate in a Prayer Retreat. We held it in October at a camp near Hermanus in the Western Cape. As missionaries from the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Cape, Namibia and even a few from Johannesburg gathered for a time of prayer, all were blessed. The power is all solar energy, so we “suffered” with no hairdryers, curling irons, etc.. The food was simple but filling… But most of all, we had a quiet, spirit-filled time with the Lord. One of our prayer times was held on the sand dunes facing the ocean. Yes, it was a little cool, and we had a good hike to get there, but on top of those dunes, we were able to focus on God’s power and what a wonderful creation He has made. We had times of individual, group, team and cluster prayer. As we prayed for our home country, the USA, and for our temporary countries, South Africa and Namibia; we were able to remember who we were and what a mighty God we serve. What a privilege it is to be here! The simple truth is that we couldn't be here without your gifts to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Those gifts are the means by which we devote ourselves to full-time ministry, providing us with a place to call home, food, medical care - even schooling for our children. It is both a humbling and exhilarating experience to live life dependent on the faithfulness and generosity of Southern Baptists. Thank you! Please know that many people around the world are truly celebrating Christmas for the first time this year because of your sacrifice for God's Kingdom.

So, What’s Been Happening…

Much has been happening since we last had an update, and we will probably forget to tell some of it. Here are a few highlights,

3 Bible Studies started in Barcelona Township, 2 are still going strong and 1 is struggling. 1 is a Ladies Bible Study and 1 is a Youth Bible Study being led by a missionary on our team, Cathy Burleson. The one that meets with couples and families is struggling. As we have known before, men are the hardest to commit and to attend. We are not sure if the location or the time we hold it is a problem. Please continue to pray that the Lord will direct us on how He would like for the Bible Study to move forward.

Speaking of Barcelona Township, how about a fish story:

Do you remember when Jesus told Peter and the others to cast the net out and it was so full they could not pull it in? Pictures come to mind of fish jumping in the nets wanting to be caught (Luke 5). Praise the Lord for just such an experience recently. In Barcelona, many people have accepted the Lord as their Savior. Recently, Pam and Jerry (Don’s assistant) were looking for Phillip’s house (a new believer) to tell him of the Bible study that would be starting. As we walked down the rocky, dirt street a lady came and asked why we wanted to find Phillip. We explained that a Bible study was starting and we wanted to invite him. The lady, Chanelle, immediately said with fervency, "I need Jesus, tell me how I can have him." Chanelle turned out to be the half-sister of Phillip, who had shared with her. As she told us about "what a bad person she was," she kept insisting that she was serious and that we must tell her what to do. However, we wanted to be sure she understood. She continued to insist and it soon became very apparent that she did. She willingly prayed and accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior in the middle of the street. Yes, the fish jumped in the net! Praise the Lord! Continue to pray for good fishing as He directs!

Finally, as this is the Christmas season, please remember the people in Port Elizabeth who are less fortunate. Remember them not only because of their misfortune and living conditions, but also because of their spiritual starvation. Please pray that this year will be the time when many will seek and find the light that has come into the world. Pray that they will hear the Gospel message and accept Jesus as their Lord, Savior and Counselor!

Rejoice with us! A heartfelt need has been realized! Since Don took over as SF (Strategy Facilitator) and Pam took over as Cluster Prayer Advocate, we have had a goal of completely renovating the "Forgotten Peoples" website to make it updateable and useable. We decided what information needed to be conveyed on the site and by the time our summer volunteer Wes arrived (see earlier blog), we allowed Wes to use his creative gifts and younger set of eyes & perception to help us bring it to final form. Ramadan Begins

When you think of Central, Eastern and Southern Africa you may think of tribal people, with bright colored clothes or wraps, wearing beads, singing with drums and shakers. But in the CESA region the increasing number of mosques and the influence of the Muslim faith impact most people groups. On September 1, with the sighting of the new moon, a time of fasting begins called “Ramadan”. This month of fasting, one of the five Pillars of the Islamic faith, is a result of obedience and causes Muslims to remember the qualities of Allah. Because of the spiritual dimension to fasting, many Muslims study the Koran and visits increase to mosques during Ramadan. We would like to challenge you to pray for Muslims during this month by using this CESA specific prayer guide. Pray that many will hear and entrust their lives to Jesus. Family Happenings!!

Wow! The month since the last family update has flown. On June 25th, we welcomed our youngest niece into the world. Hailey Murphy Lynch joined her mom and dad (Trish & Danny) and her big sister, Hannah. We can’t wait until we get to see her in person in about 9 months!

On July 3rd, Drew left and began summer school. His last day of class is today and his exam is on Monday. Yes, that was a quick class! He has also been busy working on the NCSU rugby schedule for the fall semester as well as recruiting new players during freshmen orientations.

On the 16th, Don & I celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary. It is really hard for us to believe that we have been married that long, but we praise the Lord for his love, protection and guidance in our marriage. We were able to spend a few hours in Jeffreys Bay that day watching the Billabong Pro Surfing Competition. It was really exciting and we were able to see the World Champion (and eventual winner), Kelly Slater from the USA, in action. He was impressive to watch.

Other exciting news, Matthew finished 3rd in the country in the Bio-Science Olympiad. This is a nationwide competition between Grade 11 and 12 students. There were around 120 high schools competing and several thousand students. The test was long and Matthew said is was “quite challenging.” We are very proud of him. Finally, last night was Matthew’s “matric dinner.” This is the formal event of the year for Grey High School. Since it is an all-boys’ school, they don’t have a prom but have a formal dinner. The guys rent tuxes and have a great evening. I think it is finally sinking in for him, and for us, that he is almost finished with his “school-boys career.” We will not dwell on that aspect right now.

Lord, help Thine servants to multi-task with you!!

Do you find it hard to do more than one thing at a time? I do!! It has been a challenge to try to keep up with all the Lord is doing around us (just the part that we know about). The Lord has given us many opportunities to serve him these past few weeks. Praise the Lord for 15 new believers in Barcelona. I also thank him for sending Wes our way to help us create 5 new people group websites. Can I hear an amen in the house? Pam and I are currently creating a new Forgotten Peoples website through GoDaddy.com and will transfer the domain name and scrap the old site soon. We will keep you posted.

Wes, Jerry Reid and myself (Don) traveled to the Garden Route cities of Knynsa, George, and Mossel Bay. Tourists from around the world travel here to see the breath-taking, scenic beauty of the land and ocean, whales, elephants, birds, and much, much more. The picture at the top of our blogsite is from Dolphins Point at the Kaaimans River Mountain Pass. We did not go there as tourists. We came to pray, explore and survey how best to reach this area with the help of a very few small, scattered Baptist churches in an area of exponential growth. Please pray that we will follow the Lord’s leading as to where we should place new mission personnel and with what people group(s). Who knows, maybe the Lord will show you that you are the one we have been praying and longing for to come join us.

Lastly, isn’t it great to see prayers answered? Two years ago at our annual meeting near George, a group of 40 or so of us prayed and did evangelism one day with Pastor Peter and his small, struggling, township church. His wife died 2 months prior and he was considering throwing in the towel. The work was hard and the results were meager. We also prayed over the ground where he hoped beyond hope to build a church. Praise the Lord, his church now averages over 100 and they have a beautiful, church building with no debt. Other churches pitched in to help them build it. Not only that, but he is now engaged. God is so good!!

The Crimson Tide Rolls into South Africa!

On 6 July, Big Al the elephant in the person of Wes Tate arrived in South Africa. Wes is a 21 year-old Public Relations/Graphics Design student from the University of Alabama who has come as a one-month volunteer to help in the Southwest Area Cluster office. He has been a huge help in just two weeks. He is helping us set up 8 websites for our unreached and unengaged people groups. We are changing the Forgotten Peoples website to bring it up to date to get more people praying and possibly encouraging mission trips by some of you to visit these people who desperately need the Lord. He is also assisting us in the Barcelona where 7 people prayed to receive the Lord as their savior on Thursday. We are setting up a new Bible study and working with two converts to go out with us to share the Gospel. The Lord made it possible and he deserves ALL the credit and glory and praise.

It hasn’t been all hard work!! Wes has held and played with lion cubs, spent 15 minutes petting and stroking a 5 year old Cheetah named Duma, seen adult lions, rhinos, giraffes, warthogs, and many other types of animals. He also saw a few hours of the Billabong Pro Surfing Competition in Jeffery’s Bay and the breath-taking Indian Ocean several times.

Wes has been a joy and a wonderful help. Sadly he leaves on 3 August. Pray for him and his return to the States and pray as to whether the Lord may be calling you to help short term or long term. Thanks for praying for us.

Little Pieces that form the Big Puzzle!

It amazes me that God in his overall plan works through us as if we were little pieces of a puzzle that he uses to fit together to finish the giant picture puzzle of His kingdom work. Occasionally, he allows us to see multiple pieces fit together that form this huge puzzle. This past week on a trip to East London (a city of 1 million located 3-4 hours north of Port Elizabeth), Don and one of his team leaders, Bob Morris, were thrilled to see a portion of the puzzle fitting together. In October, Roxie Shore and Deb Russell will come to serve among the Xhosa youth and young adults in East London. They will be the only 2 missionaries in this city. Don and Bob met with 2 local pastors in East London, who are being led by God to start or expand ministry works through their churches. Both of them feel that Roxie and Deb can be a vital part in this work. Pastor Vuyo’s church in the Cambridge Township (pictured above) has a preschool and an AIDS care ministry. They desire to reach youth with the Gospel as well as helping in practical ways. The church received money and bought some computers and will begin teaching computer skills in the township to help people in getting a job. They also desire to reach high school youth and young adults. Pastor John heads a more affluent Baptist church in the middle of the city, but they desire to reach the Xhosa people that now predominately make up the community around the church with the Gospel. They have an AIDS clinic, a daycare, and are opening an AIDS hospice. They will be starting a Xhosa-speaking service soon after the ladies arrive. It is not mere coincidence that the pieces seem to be coming together, just as the girls arrive. Join us as we praise the Lord for His work!

Drew's visit home draws to a close! :-(

Drew has been home with us for almost seven weeks and we have had a wonderful time with him here. He will be leaving on Wednesday to head back to America. Please be in prayer for all of us as we separate again. During his time here we have done quite a few things. We’ve gone to many rugby matches (Matthew’s rugby season is about half over), traveled to Cape Town and Queenstown, played games of Jenga and Scrabble, seen a few movies, visited a few of Drew’s favorite restaurants (enjoyed some of his favorite home meals also), played backyard rugby and had a few golfing adventures. He was able to see many of his friends here and had some good times with them. All in all, it has been wonderful for us and him. He will be leaving us in the middle of winter (gathered around our heaters) and heading back to the heat of the North Carolina summer. Fortunately, he will be leaving the North Carolina winter in December and joining us again in the middle of our summer. (Boy, is he confused on what to wear!?!) Pray for us as we are apart and we look forward to our time together with him again as well as time together with our other family members and friends in the near future!

This Thursday morning was our weekly outreach in Barcelona township in Port Elizabeth. Today, Don, myself, Betty Goeda-one of our national friends who regularly goes with us, and Cathy Burleson-another missionary in PE who joined us for the first time, participated in the outreach. Barcelona is one of the poorest and most crime-ridden townships here. We shared the Gospel with many adults and some children were also present. At the last house we visited, we met Maggie and Charles Olifant (olifant is the Afrikaans spelling for "elephant"). They are in their 50's and have heard of Jesus, but are not attending a church and have no relationship with our Savior. After a time of sharing, they both prayed to receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Not only
that, they were so excited that they insisted that we start a Bible study in their home for their friends and neighbors. Wow! We have been searching for such a place and the Lord has provided. Maggie says that she will "gather the people." Continue to pray as we work out the time. Pray for Maggie and Charles as they begin this journey. Maggie shared that their household (we are not exactly sure how many live there yet), has been a household with not only unbelievers but full of alcohol, drugs, fighting and many other things. She asked that we pray for those in her home. Pray for Maggie and Charles!

Can you hardly believe it? The Lynches have a blog site. After much thought and many reservations, we decided to go ahead and try it! Hopefully it will work out well. We will try to have a short blog as regularly as our schedule allows, so that you-our prayer partners, friends and family can keep up to date with

Let us start with the most recent events and then maybe later we can inform you of things from the "not so far ago" past. Hmm.... One of the most exciting things that has happened recently is that Drew came back for his summer break from university. He arrived on May 9th and will be with us until July 2nd. Although Matthew is still in school during this time, in fact he is going through exams right now, we are enjoying time with Drew. The boys have enjoyed some time together.

This past week, while Matthew was slaving away in his exams (he has 14 in all!), Drew went under the knife to have all 4 of his wisdom teeth surgically removed. He came through the surgery and recovery well (and mom & dad were glad that he was here so they could take care of him). Matthew still has 5 more exams to go!
